Just as it was in danger of disappearing up its minimalist eski arse, grime does a sudden about-turn. Along with Roll Deep’s forthcoming offering, 19 year old Kane Robinson’s debut pioneers the path by taking us on a virtual magical mystery tour of all things musical. Jungle proves to still be ma-ssive on the treble-time sounds of Reload It, while Nobody Don’t Dance No More transports you back to the time when UK Garage was good. That’s not to mention the brilliant broodiness of Ps & Q’s and Diplo’s should-be-shit but actually ace samba inspired Remember Me.
Despite being a heady mix of altering aurals, there’s common ground found in Kano’s confident couplets. Providing an illuminating glimpse into East London life, the emcee is considered, occasionally even conscious. “There’s too much war,” he sighs on How We Livin’. It remains to be seen whether grime can penetrate the mainstream, but with an album so lyrically lucid and sonically exciting, it seems if anyone can do it, Kano can.
