Yes Kanyeezy’s back and he’s filing for Late Registration. Got invited to a swanky style playback of his second long-player at the Whitfield St Studios last night with the big man himself in attendance. it was all very serious ‘no phones, cameras, Dictaphones, recording devices, anything that looks even vaguely electronic’ tho to be fair so much of College Dropout leaked beforehand, you can’t blame the man. Anyway, after introducing the album by saying he’s about to become everybody’s favourite rapper, the Louis Vuitton Don treated us to a good hour plus of really quite beautiful music. The kid is serious, serious about his soul – but fear not, he’s taken his finger off the speed-it-up button. Instead ‘Song’s In The Key Of Life’, Etta James and Ray Charles samples are chopped up while the likes of Brandy sing the ass out of some serious melodies. Believe me, this is the most musical album you will have heard in a minute, New York or otherwise. Rhyme-wise, West has sharpened up his game, improving his flow and losing some of his more absurd metaphors – though I must admit to kinda missing those. I always love Kanye when he’s being mad cheesy. Still, you can’t hate on this album and I’m sorry Common fans, but this is the real-deal XXL. Actually, I may take that back, I’ve only heard the bloody thing once and I’m not about to join in the hysterical hip hop journalism strata of over-hyping something just cos it’s better than half of the other shite we’re forced to listen to (has anyone even tried to play the Young Guns album? Yuck). So in conclusion, while I would like a few more spins, the verdict here is that August will be Kanye month, but by gum, the boy deserves it.
