Lauren Live - the verdict

Um, ah, er. Oh.
Was maybe too excited about this - so my overwhelming feeling was one of mild disapointment. Not sure she quite warranted the savaging that R1 and the Evening Standard gave, but in general L.Boogie was too darned late. Nigh on two hours she kept us, troubling over such important matters like what to wear - her words - and when she finally got herself onstage she decided to treat us to Santana-inspired versions of 'To Zion' while 'Doo Wop (That Thing) was barely audible. That said, you gots to respect her artistry and her right to perform what she wants and how she wants - even if it is random poems that end entirely in 'izm' or 'ist.' Luckily 'Fu-Gee-La' and 'Ready Or Not', delivered at the tailend of the evening, saved the day and got everyone up on their feet. In some respects, and I'm borrowing a friends opinion here, it was great to get an artist raw and uncut rather than over record-company polished and trained - we at least felt as though we were seeing Lauren Hill as she wants to be rather than some foolish marketing man. Maybe, in a few years time when she returns with a scorching second album, I'll look back at last night and be 'Oh, I get what she was doing now.' I hope so, anyway.
