Yegads, hip hop heads need to backspin their way to a fantastic exhibition coming to London pretty soon. We know the names of Henry Chalfont and Ms Martha Cooper, but a few years before these guys got documenting a man called Joe Conzo was busy snapping away at life in the Bronx. Featuring beautiful b&w shots of everyone from Busy Bee to Cold Crush, the few images I've seen are rather dope. There will also be original Buddy Esquire flyers on display as well as posters, sleeve covers and label art live and direct from the time of Afrika Bambaataa, Flash, GWizard Theodore and many many more. If that wasn't enough some clever sod has compiled a soundtrack featuring rare footage of unreleased battle tapes from the '70s. A mini-film fest will also see screenings of seminal hip hop movies 'Wild Style', 'Style Wars' and 'Stations Of The Elevate' (which I must confess I've never seen). What more could one ask for (except maybe a live show from all of the aforementioned maybe...)?
Held at the Vinyl Factory Gallery in Soho, London from July 14th to August 24th Born In The Bronx sounds like a must-see to me. I wonder if I mention here that it is sponsored by Ecko, I might get some free clothes? Just a thought....
