Over on Fatlace, there's an ace interview with Cookie of the Cookie Crew, or MC Remedee as she was known then! Now. for those that don't know, Cookie and Susie Q not only made the first ever major UK rap record, they even broke the US while they were at it! Rok Da House is still widely recognised as the first hip-house tune. In the late '80s they killed the clubs with Born This Way. I need to dig out my brother's Got To Keep On 7" soon and get Cookie to sign that shit!
Later on, Cookie ended up working on the other side of the mic in the music industry. When our paths first crossed, I couldn't work up the nerve to say I'd been a fan back in the day, but as it turns out Ms. Cooks is mighty proud of her past, so I have to get round to doing my own interview with her on this blog. I did grab a couple of quotes off her for a piece I did for the Guardian recently - well, I had to, how are you going to do a feature on British women in hip hop and NOT talk to Cooks!
You can read that here: Guardian Piece
(Also, I didn't write the intro, so I'm not personally saying that Ms. Dynamite, Lady Sov and even M.I.A (does Monie Love count too?) haven't had US success, but I think the point is that there hasn't been comparable success like that in a long time, as in a Brit, female rapper getting love from US rap fans, like Cookie Crew did...)
You can read for Fat Lace interview here: Fat Lace
But for those that want to take a trip down memory lane, check out the clip of the C.C on John Peel in 1986! They roc the house!!! John Peel ZShare
