voting schmoting
So seeing as I'm away on holiday - (for the first time in like three years - press trips, NYC hen-nights and seeing my mum in China besides) - I got my- (what do you mean that's holiday? Hell no, fool. The only holiday I get with involves sand, sea, skies that are blue and a world without smog, Mac or Mobile). Sorry, where was I? Oh yeah, this election. Being as I'm on holiday I've decided to vote by post. Having been bought up in a fiercely political household - we're talking miners strike marches, ban the bomb demos, the works - I'm ashamed to admit this is actually the first ever time I've voted. Not that it's entirely my fault - housing, er, issues have put paid to me being, shall we say, 'eligible' in the past but anyway, finally I get the chance. So while I'm waiting for the form to arrive I get to thinking about who I'll vote for. For years there was only ever one choice in my mind. You voted Labour, simple as. Having been born, bred and battered about the brain with Labour all my life (to the extent of having to go leafletting and canvassing for the Reds), the decision should have been an easy one. Hell, it should have been obvious but I tell you, it was a struggle. There was no way in hell I was going to give the Tories my coveted cross, but, damn, don't you hate Tony Blair? I used to think the dude was pretty safe, but after all the lies, lies and more lies I'm SO not feeling him. Not to go all David Ike, but if that guy's Lizard Theory - www.??????? is actually correct and not a load of mad-in-head lunacy - then Tony, with his slimy looking self is defo one of the bad guys. He looks like he's about to morph into a weird 'i'm going to rule the wooooorrrrld' alien any second, ya know? So then there's the Lib Dem's - a waste - and the Green Party...well, their environmental sheezy is on point no doubt but I'm uneducated on their policies. And with work to finish and bags to pack, there was no time to investigate further.....So it's obvious I guess who, reluctantly got my vote - I went for what I know and was bought up believing rather than any strong political feeling or faith in Labour. I hate the man who runs the party, but lets hope he won't be in power for too much longer. The cliche about the lesser of the two evils does ring true - is there really any difference between the parties anymore and does it really matter who runs the country? I'm happy I finally got to vote though. Many women fought for that privilege so I'm glad that the choice- however limited - is at least there. Maybe next time I'll get to see the polling booth - now that would be cool.
