Check out this book by a young fellow called Adam Mansbach. It's not his first and undoubtedly it won't be his last, cos this dude has serious storytelling skills. Telling the tale of hip hop obsessed Macon Detorney, Mansbach weaves a strange tale through Detorey's total desire to be down. Posing plentiful questions about politics, identity, inherent rascism and, of course, hip hop, this book is quite unlike anything I've ever read. As a hip hop head, I loved the references to rap and kinda dug Mansbach occasional forays into writing his own rhymes. He's got skills!
Whatever race, religion or beliefs you hold, there will be a lot for you to identify with in this book, I think, particularly the hip hop heads out there. It also got me questioning a lot of things I thought I knew about, or beliefs I thought I held, but didn't.
It's not a page-turner I have to say, in fact it's been delaying me getting to Harry Potter Part 6 for months now. It's not hard to get into, it's just more one of those 'read a couple of pages and soak it up as you go' type of affairs.
'Angry Black White Boy' is a book that will get you thinking, challenge your politics and above all tells a great, if not unusual story.
